Friends Campaign

Dear Friends:
December 2008

Tonight a Jewish family in Wilkes-Barre is shivering in the dark. They can’t afford to pay the electric bill. Another family has no dinner to put on the table because grocery prices have risen so steeply. A third family is about to be evicted from their home. An elderly woman wants to keep kosher, but she cannot leave her home and has no one to bring her kosher food.

Not since the flood of 1972 has there been such a need for services. In order to help 150 clients we need to raise $50,000! Which of these people would you turn your back on? We cannot ignore any of them.

Most of these clients have had so many doors slammed in their faces that it is difficult for them to ask for help from just anyone. They never thought that they would be in the position they are in today. When they chose to turn to JFS for assistance they were treated as a Jew being helped by a Jewish community.

Since 1888 the Jewish community has come together to help needy families. First a destitute family that needed an invalid’s chair, then the single parent who had no means to support his children. People left money in an envelope at the deli to help their fellow Jews.

Our troubled economy is similar to that of the 1920s and 1930s. In 1936-1937 JFS spent $4,245.45 on relief for 74 families dealing with many of the same issues that they have today. We now have over twice the number of clients and we need over ten times the amount of money to help those in need. In order to help 150 clients we need to raise $50,000!

Your donation of one dollar a day ($365 a year) will make a significant difference in someone’s life by providing the following services:

  • Fifteen hours of counseling
  • $365 worth of food for the kosher pantry
  • 70 home delivered kosher meals for one person
  • $365 in emergency financial assistance for one family

We are asking you to contribute more than you have in the past, on behalf of those families we told you about and those whose stories you do not yet know.

Thank you for your anticipated support,
